Interview with Justinn De Beer, new functions manager at Northshore Harbour Cafe
3 February 2022
The Harbour Café is kicking off 2022 with a bang, bringing a new team on board, including renowned Brisbane venue owner, Justinn De Beer as the new functions manager. Justinn has decades of experience in the hospitality industry, first beginning his career in South Africa before travelling abroad and eventually settling in Brisbane.
He has been a staple in the Brisbane hospitality scene for the past 10 years, working with La Rouche, managing Brooklyn Standard and opening Hello Gorgeous at Newstead. If his enormous success on the Brisbane food and drink scene is any sign, the Harbour Café at Northshore Brisbane is going to be seeing some momentous changes in 2022, and we’re excited!
We caught up with Justinn to chat about his plans.
What attracted you to the Harbour Café?
After selling my bar in Newstead I really wanted a change of pace and after my initial interview I really loved the café and to be honest, the team they have here are great. I had no idea it even existed, so it was a nice surprise to discover this little hidden gem.
What should we expect from the Harbour Café in 2022?
We are looking into opening for dinner on weekends and I am going to add some cocktails to the drinks list including a house Brunch Bloody Mary and some more fresh summery temperance style drinks. We also intend to do a few one-off outdoor events.
What does the Harbour Café have to offer Brisbane that is different from other venues?
Well, it’s a little bit off the beaten track and obviously the view is nothing short of spectacular! Brisbane’s best kept secret I believe. And not to mention a fantastic function space, which is second to none.
What is your favourite cocktail for summer?
Tough question: I drink a lot of gin, when it comes to cocktails, I usually drink a GIBSON (Gin Martini, preferably navy strength garnished with pickled cocktail onions) I also like a simple well-made Tom Collins. As with most people, my favorite cocktails are continuously changing. These are just what I like at the moment. I also like a good Margarita but served on the rocks.
What are your favourite dishes on the new menu?
I love the Asian Fish Tacos we have on the lunch menu and when it comes to our breakfast menu, I personally think our Potato Hash (AKA Potato Rosti) is one if the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating.
