Innovation and Sustainability

Northshore Brisbane is a growing ecosystem of entrepreneurs and Electric Vehicle (EV) fast-charging station businesses committed to sustainable futures. EDQ offers the Hatch Demonstration Space to support, test and incubate innovation, in particular sustainable technologies. Examples of innovations that have been supported by EDQ include modular farming, EV charger stations, smart irrigation and solar lighting.

Going Green

Northshore Brisbane is a place of sustainable design that connects the past, present and future.

Northshore Brisbane celebrates its Indigenous, industrial and maritime history as it works towards a cleaner, greener and smarter future.

Leading the way by setting sustainable benchmarks and ingraining cutting-edge design and eco-initiatives into the precinct, Northshore Brisbane is targeting a 6 Star Green Star – Communities v1.1 rating. Green Star is an internationally recognised Australian sustainability rating and certification system that provides guidance on how to develop precincts that are healthy, resilient, and positive places for people to live and work in.

The area which is targeted for the Green Star rating is outlined on the map below and specifically pertains to the waterfront mixed-use residential development area, including the future Brisbane 2032 Athlete Village.

Modular Farms Company

Modular Farms Co. opened its first permanent herb and vegetable production facility—inside a shipping container —at Eat Street Northshore. The vertical hydroponic farm supplies fresh herbs and vegetables to food vendors at Eat Street Northshore. With access to power and water, Modular Farms can grow fresh produce equivalent to the yield of 1.5 acres, nearly anywhere in the world and in any climate.

Solar Lights Linked to the LoRaWAN Gateway

Orca Solar Lighting supplied a custom lighting solution for the 1300+ car park area at Eat Street Northshore. Fifty-four Vertex® solar lighting systems, on 10m high relocatable poles, are integrated into the Northshore Brisbane LoRaWAN™ Smart City IoT network. This enables remote access control, autonomous light level scheduling and real-time performance monitoring. The autonomous light level scheduling allows the lights to adjust to a high level (Category P11A) on the weekends and medium levels (Category P11B) throughout the week, remotely monitored over the internet. The relocatable infrastructure means the technology can be cost effectively moved and used at other sites in the future. This project provides significant cost savings and flexibility with lighting infrastructure.
